Wrocław has forged an international reputation for its lively cultural events for a long time. Starting in the 1960s, the city became the world capital of avant-garde theater thanks to Jerzy Grotowski’s Laboratory Theater, Henryk Tomaszewski’s Pantomime Theater and the International Open Theater Festival. Wrocław is the only city in Poland to exhibit annually the super productions of classic operas in stadium, in halls or on waterfronts, which usually attract an audience of around 5,000 people or more.

Due to the rich cultural offer and ideas to promote it among a wide audience, Wrocław held the title of the European Capital of Culture 2016. As the capital of Lower Silesia it provides European cultural diversity, friendly spaces of the city, satisfying desire to get acquainted with culture and art. Cities that win the competition, become the cultural centers of Europe for a year. The whole year was filled with festivals, concerts, conferences and other artistic and cultural activities, which brings attention not only to the inhabitants of the city, the region and the country, but also to the utter continent.
