Gdańsk

Gdańsk is as old as Poland itself. Located in the north of the country on the sea coast at the mouth of the Vistula, Gdańsk was the Polish gateway to the sea, a thriving, wealthy city, an important Hanseatic port and a Free City.

It is here that the majority of Gdańsk summer art festivals are held, as well as the famous Dominican Fair which attracts many visitors from all over the world.

A real masterpiece of architecture is the short ulica Mariacka (Holy Mary Street) with its narrow houses and spacious terraces under which are located amber jewellery galleries.

 

Culture & art

Kultura i sztuka jest w Gdańsku dziedzictwem pozostawionym przez pokolenia żyjące tu na przestrzeni ponad tysiąca lat. Trudna historia nie zawsze pozwoliła na zachowanie oryginalnych dzieł. Wielowiekowe budowle, które można dzisiaj podziwiać w Gdańsku, zostały w większości wzniesione na nowo w XX wieku po wojennych zniszczeniach, ale i tak mają ogromną wartość. Pomagają poczuć atmosferę Gdańska z przeszłości. Nadmorska lokalizacja miasta była zawsze szansą na rozwój i dostatnie życie, a to umożliwiało rozwój sztuki. I tak zostało do dziś. Zainteresowanie gdańszczan i turystów kulturą  i sztuką jest tak powszechne, że nikogo nie dziwią starania Gdańska o pozyskanie tytułu ESK 2016. Otwartość mieszkańców sprawia, że każda nowinka kulturalna i każde nowe działanie w sztuce, znajdują swoich zwolenników w Gdańsku. Używając języka generacji komputerowej można powiedzieć, że Gdańsk jest jak „europa.zip” bo można tu znaleźć wszystko czym szczyci się Europa tyle, że czasem w skróconej postaci. Wolni od uprzedzeń, ciekawi Innych, ciekawi świata i w każdej sprawie działający w myśl sentencji wypisanej na herbie miasta „bez strachu, ale z rozwagą”. Tacy są ludzie, którzy w tym pięknym mieście, w różnej formie wyrażają to „co im w duszy gra”. Organizatorzy dużych imprez międzynarodowych podkreślają, że przyjechali do Gdańska, bo to miasto dumne, przepełnione myślami o WOLNOŚCI. Wolni od lęku przed konkurencją gdańszczanie zawsze podkreślają, że są z Trójmiasta. Osiągnięcia kulturalne i sukcesy artystyczne są dziełem ludzi zamieszkujących trzy zaprzyjaźnione miasta (Gdańsk, Sopot, Gdynia), których granice dawno już się zatarły. Nie jesteśmy w Gdańsku jesteśmy w Metropolii. Sopot wnosi do tego związku młodzieńczy entuzjazm studiującej tu młodzieży, Gdynia wyznacza kurs na sukces w biznesie i przyciąga do siebie żeglarzy z całej Polski. O kulturze i sztuce nie powinno się mówić tylko dać sobie szansę obejrzenia obiektów w Trójmieście, którymi zachwyca się cały świat.

 

 

Entertainment

Gdańsk ma do zaoferowania różne formy rozrywki, w zależności od wieku, ale też i od środków jakie planujemy wydać. Proponujemy specjalne trasy turystyczne dla całych rodzin, dla zakochanych i dla tych, którzy cenią spokój. Można zwiedzać miasto na rowerze przejeżdżając bezpiecznie po rozwiniętej sieci tras rowerowych. Można pływać kajakiem, tramwajem wodnym, statkiem. Można żeglować, surfować (nie tylko po Internecie). Jeżeli kochamy konie, to tutaj też możemy realizować nasze pasje. Po całym dniu turystycznych atrakcji wieczorem zapraszają restauracje, kawiarnie a każda ma swoją nadzwyczajną atmosferę. Wyróżniają nas miejsca, w których można zorganizować koncert np. na wyspie (scena na Ołowiance) albo w stoczni wśród dźwigów. Mówimy Gdańsk ale miejscem, w którym przez cały rok młodzież, a latem turyści, mogą do późnych godzin korzystać z rozrywek jest Sopot. W Gdyni plaża jest w samym mieście i nie ma lepszego miejsca na rozrywkowe spotkania mieszkańców niż ta plaża.

 

Food & Drink

Jedzenie i napoje są tak samo ważne dla turysty, jak zwiedzane obiekty. Każdy region Europy stara się być rozpoznawalny nie tylko po zabytkach, ale także po tym co stawiamy na stole. Gdańsk to kuchnia kaszubska, wódka gdańska i piwo… ze świata. Jeżeli turysta ma inne upodobania kulinarne, to bez problemu trafi do restauracji litewskiej, greckiej, chińskiej. I tak jest w każdym z trzech nadmorskich miast. Nadmorskich a więc w menu nie zabraknie ryby złowionej w Bałtyku i trunków ulubionych przez marynarzy.

 

Shopping

Zakupy znaczą zupełnie co innego dla turysty niż dla mieszkańca Gdańska. W czasach globalizacji jest wiele sieci sklepów, które można spotkać w każdym europejskim mieście i na pewno nie tych sklepów szuka turysta. Najważniejsze są takie sklepy, w których można kupić przedmioty charakterystyczne dla regionu. W Gdańsku są to wyroby z bursztynu. Najpiękniejsza ze starych uliczek (Mariacka) jest jak wielka galeria bursztynowa. Nowoczesna Galeria Bałtycka jest jak centrum wystawowe. Prezentacje reklamowo-kulturalne odbywają się tutaj na powierzchni będącej marmurową mapą Bałtyku. W Gdyni wchodzimy do centrum przypominającego swoją bryłą transatlantyk „Batory”. Wszystkie centra handlowe w Trójmieście udostępniają powierzchnię na wystawy twórczości najmłodszych mieszkańców Metropolii. Zakupy w Trójmieście mogą być jedną z atrakcji turystycznych.

 

Traveling by car

The Metropolitan Area and the region lie exactly on the convergence of international trunk transport corridors running from Scandinavia and North-Eastern Europe to Southern Europe and the Mediterranean Sea in one direction, and from the northern part of Western Europe to Eastern Europe.

The grid of the existing international and national roads links the region to: Southern Europe via the Czech Republic and Slovakia (E-75, E-77, and national roads Nos. 1 and 7), Eastern Europe via Kaliningrad (E-22, national road No. 22), and Western Europe via Germany (E-28, national road No. 6). The network of regional and local roads serves transport within the region and metropolitan area.

The A1 motorway in construction is of strategic importance for the development of the Metropolitan Area. Linking the region to southern Poland and Europe, the road will offer the shortest route from Scandinavia down south the continent and onwards towards the East, along the VI European transport corridor.

 

Traveling by train

Four international railway trunk lines cross the voivodship:

•          from Gdańsk via Szczecin to the German border,

•          from Gdynia via Warsaw and Cracow down to the Czech and Slovak border,

•          from Gdynia via Bydgoszcz, Łódź, and Katowice to the western and southern state

•          borders,

•          from Gdynia via Olsztyn to Kaliningrad, or via Białystok to Belarus.

Pomerania has 1350 km of railway lines in operation. The density of the railway network is one of the highest in the country. The high status of the metropolis and region on the railway map of Poland stems from e.g. the fact that a large proportion of the cargo reaching the seaports is delivered by rail.

Based on the existing track lines of the swift commuter trains, extended to include newly laid lines, the metropolitan railway will cover the western districts of Gdańsk and Gdynia, including the Gdańsk airport and – ultimately – the airport in Babie Doły. The metropolitan railway will be a far quicker means of transport than a private car or bus.

 

Traveling by plane

Poland’s accession to the European Union and opening the skies to low-cost carriers have triggered increase in air transport. The number of regular flights, passenger traffic, and the volumes of the cargo handled in Gdańsk are growing year by year. The Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport services direct flights to almost 30 cities in Europe, including major international transit ports in Warsaw, Frankfurt on the Mein, Copenhagen, Munich, and the airports taking the prime European low-costs. The network of the available airway links enables swift and efficient transfer of people and cargo from the Gdańsk Metropolitan Area to any location in the world.

Alongside the expansion of the existing airport, another option is pondered, i.e. the potential building of another civilian airport in the metropolis. The other facility would increase the overall capacity by far more planes, passengers, and cargo, within a radius extending far beyond the borders of the Pomeranian Voivodship.

 

Public transport

The economic potential of a metropolis is, among other factors, a function of well organized public transport which enables the residents to move smoothly from and to school, work, and places of leisure. The main organiser of the public transport in the Gdańsk Metropolis is the Metropolitan Transport Association of the Bay of Gdańsk (www.mzkzg.org). The purpose of the Association is to integrate the existing bus, tram, trolley, and swift commuter train (overground equivalent of the subway) systems.

For three years now the association has also been promoting water transport in the summer season, i.e. the water tram shuttle between the harbours of Gdańsk, Gdynia, Sopot, and Hel.

To further improve transport in the Area, an intelligent system of monitoring and controlling the road traffic is planned. Integration of the cycling routes will create another attractive alternative to the car or public transport.
