Szczecin_culture_and_artSzczecin has very interesting history that made the city open-minded and multicultural. It had been German, Swedish and even French during last 1000 years. In order to learn something about rich history, it’s best to take a walk along the City Tourist Route, which leads through the most important monuments and heart of Szczecin.

Szczecin has also plenty of theatres. The oldest city theatre is the Polish Theatre, opened in 1946.

Four years later, in 1950 the second one was opened called Contemporary Theatre. Recently a place that one can see the staging of the most widely acclaimed contemporary dramas is called „Malarnia”. Szczecin’s young audience also have their theatre – „Pleciuga” Puppet Theatre, one of the best of its kind in Poland. A particular theatre named „Kana”, which presents the achievments of excellent artists from Szczecin and neighboring border regions.It supports local culture by organising conferences, workshops and seminars devoted to contemporary culture, art and leads many projects.

The Pomeranian Dukes’ Castle functions as the cultural centre of Western Pomerania. There are held well-known chamber music concerts, Organ and Chamber Music Festival. Castle host seminars, publishes events and exhibitions of famous painters and photographers.  Also contains opera, studio cinema and „Krypta” Theatre.

Szczecin is the home to world’s oldest continually operating cinema – „Pionier”, Filharmony and one of the most valuable book collections – „Książnica Pomorska” with the most important centre of Buddhism in Poland. Szczecin is also Polish capital city of jazz music.

Szczecin is an important place on the cultural map of Europe and also one of candidates to European Capital of Culture 2016. Artists from all over the world flock here in search of inspiration, while people of Szczecin create famous underground culture. Youth and multiculturality keeps the city open for music, theatres and the visual arts, where unconventional solutions are uniquely commonplace.
