The competition is open to smaller urban centres (between 25,000 and 100,000 inhabitants). To apply for the title of a European Destination of Excellence 2023, towns should showcase their best practices in the area of sustainable tourism and green transformation. The competition is open to all EU and non-EU countries participating in the COSME programme.

Applications are initially assessed by a panel of independent experts in the field of sustainable development. At the next stage, representatives of the three selected towns will present their applications before a committee, who will select one winner to carry the title of  European Destination of Excellence 2023. The results of the competition will be announced in November 2022.

The winning town will be awarded the status of a sustainable tourism pioneer committed to the objectives of the European Green Deal and will receive expert support in promotion and branding throughout 2023.

EU institutions will also promote the winning destination to boost its tourism. Promotion of the winner will include, among others, a video showcasing sustainable practices that have made the town stand out.

Applications are accepted until 1 June 2022, 5pm. Detailed information can be found at: https://ec.europa.eu/growth/sectors/tourism/eden/apply_en
