Poland's commitment to sustainable practices within the MICE industry is gaining momentum, with recent developments highlighting the nation's dedication to environmental responsibility and social impact. From the publication of Wrocław's pioneering "Green Events" document to Kraków and Gdańsk's participation in the prestigious Global Destination Sustainability (GDS) Index, Poland is at the forefront of sustainable event management.

Wrocław's Convention Bureau has set a precedent with its "Green Events" document, a comprehensive resource showcasing environmentally friendly practices within the MICE sector. Publishing "Green Events" is the result of a commitment to promoting environmentally friendly practices and taking sustainable actions within the MICE industry. Kraków and Gdansk - Global Destination Sustainability - GDS-Index Report 

Poland as a country is categorized within the Eastern European region in the latest Global Destination Sustainability - GDS-Index Report. Four cities from this region participate in the ranking - Krakow, Ljubljana, and Tallinn were joined by Gdansk in 2023. According to the GDS-Index, all cities have shown significant commitment.  

Krakow is recognized for its sound destination management strategy, as well as its open policy on diversity, equality, and inclusivity (DEI). Based on sixty-nine criteria divided into four main categories, Krakow achieved the following results:

  • city's environmental protection efforts scored 60.3% (compared to 66.7% in 2022),
  • social activities of the city scored 56.6% (compared to 59.2% last year),
  • supplier activities scored 12.7% (10.4% in 2022),
  • and city management activities scored 43.2% (an increase from 33.6%).

Krakow received a total of 43.2 points - areas requiring improvement primarily include service providers in the tourism sector such as hotels and agencies. 

Gdansk, participating in the benchmarking for the first time, has shown a strong commitment towards more sustainable destination management, engaging residents in tourism-related discussions, and providing training for stakeholders. Gdansk Convention Bureau has taken a significant step by calculating the carbon footprint of its organized conference, prioritizing a "net zero" approach

SITE Poland Responsible Incentive Travel Day 2024 Conference in Warsaw

SITE Poland Responsible Incentive Travel Day Conference at Hilton Warsaw City Hotel, April 5th 2024. The event, organized as part of the "Our Impact on People, Society, and the Planet" project, focuses on promoting sustainable tourism practices within the Polish market. Attendees, including members of the SITE Poland Association, MICE Agencies and convention bureaus, will engage in discussions led by industry experts on minimizing the negative environmental impact of tourism. With a keynote lecture on the environmental repercussions of tourism and presentations of industry survey results, participants will gain insights into current practices and challenges. Panel discussions involving representatives from Incentive Agencies, hotels, airlines, and destinations aim to foster collaboration towards creating sustainable tourism experiences. 

Session II „Sustainable Destinations” is led by the Poland Convention Bureau in collaboration with regional and municipal Polish convention bureaux. 

The event also highlights the role of responsible travellers and encourages dialogue on strategies for mindful travel, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Supported by Hilton Worldwide as a Strategic Partner, the event endeavours to inspire and motivate businesses to adopt sustainable practices, fostering a responsible incentive travel market.
